A couple of caveats to your comment about anti-intellectualism.

1. You were in a Waffle House, not a Starbucks.
2. It was in Nashville, TN*, thereby lowering the likelihood of finding intellectuals (aka reedurz) at a Waffle House.
3. You were probably reading some kind of smart-guy book, like history or politics. Next time, bring along a Tom Clancy novel. Or, better yet, put a Tom Clancy dustjacket over the book you’re actually reading. No one will ever know.

That said, we teachers have known for X (where X > 5x our stated age) years that students just don’t read books** anymore. Video is where it’s at, I hear.

* Don’t rag on me for dumping on TN, even if I did live in KY for 30 years. Nashville is better than rural TN, but it’s not exactly Boston.
** Except for Twilight and Harry Potter, which are outliers.
