Never mind today, I’ve been seeing this since the late 90s on USENET: I’d be arguing with some loud but not-very-bright right wing arsehole from the States, and as they inevitably start losing the argument, they suddenly bring up some hitherto undisclosed past life as a military veteran, and present it as they have this expectation that I’m going to immediately bow down before such a blatant appeal to authority that’s been so pulled out of nowhere, it might as well have been a rabbit pulled out of a top hat.

Of course, being a working class kid from Glasgow, my response would usually be along the lines of: “I don’t care if you were the first man on the fucking Moon, your argument, as previously stated, is still wrong because of X, Y, Z, etc.” They usually blocked me after that, that’s how tough they really were..
