I competed in a statewide Rotary International questionnaire and essay contest in Michigan in 1975, where they selected two people from the state to go to another country for a year.

My mother let me enter it, convinced that of the thousands entering I would not be selected, and that would teach me about setting goals too high and disappointment.

I was selected based on the strength of my essay on the Vietnam War (the same question was put to everyone), then she was really concerned because we didn’t have the money to pay the airfare (though she didn’t tell me that). She got lucky (she won $5,000 in the state lottery on a scratch ticket).

She only told me about the lottery win paying for the trip about ten years ago.
