So why do you need it except out of political expediency, and why should a judge let you get away with that?

Please note that many of these laws were not struck from the law, merely postponed by the courts. In those cases they will be allowed to go into effect now that this election cycle is over. The courts questioned the motivation behind passing such laws so close to a national election with inadequate evidence of compelling need for them. In the 2014 and 2016 elections there will be many more states requiring state issued ID to vote.
