No, this isn’t really true. He’s famous for Watergate, and he’s written a lot of books, but he’s not really considered a great journalist. His style has come into a lot of criticism— a lot of reporters feel he gets co-opted very easily, as he did with Bush.

He’s not a liberal icon. He’s one of the reporters that followed the story, but he didn’t do it because of liberal principles, but because he was a reporter. He’d be a weird choice of icon.
