I’m not so sure it’s just Americans (though we certainly have plenty of whackaloons here).

As scientists across all fields uncover more and more information about how the world works, that information seems to grow in a manner similar to Moore’s Law for computers.

At some point it becomes impossible to grasp everything, as our knowledge outstrips our brains to process it. (That might explain biologists who are also creationists.)

The Inverse Square Law (Coulomb’s Law) is used for a lot more than cosmology (for example, electromagnetism).
