Their view always bothered me. My family for the most part comes from a strong RCC tradition of valuing being sympathetic and helpful to those in need.

Yeah I encountered them when I went through a lengthy period of spiritual soul-searching 8-10 years ago. They have what I would call a very reductionist view of the Bible. Perhaps not surprisingly this leads many of them to a rather narrow view of life that seems impervious to evidence or empathy.
