We, as a nation, have got to stop electing individuals from an extremely narrow segment of the economy (lawyers) and stop re-electing politicians who have never done anything since leaving college or grad school but work in government. The founding fathers represented a broad range of the overall economy and had a broad range of professional experiences: George Washington-surveyor and militia, Ben Franklin-printing and science, Jefferson-agriculture and law, Paul Revere in MA-Silversmith, John Hancock-Merchant, Sam Adams-Brewing etc. As a result someone would inevitably understand how acts of the Continental Congress (and in the Colonial/State Legislatures) would impact almost any given segment of the economy. This is not to say they didn’t screw up (Articles of Confederation) but they had a solid baseline of economic understanding from which to work and someone in Congress would have their “ox gored” from almost any economic policy so they had a self-interest in maintaining some semblence of sane economic policies. Our current Congress and POTUS are, to be nice, clueless regarding the practical application of economic policy. It behoves the electorate to stop electing bad lawyers who have been running for one office or another since they were 25-years old and start nominating and electing some citizens with some real world experience.
