True story. Today, one of my study hall kids asks for a library pass.

“What are you going to do in the library?” I ask.

“Study,” he says.

“Study what?”

“History.”

“Cool. What are you doing for history?”

“I have to research this Indian.”

By the fact that the kid is a junior (American History year), I deduce we are talking more Sitting Bull than Gandhi. “Which Indian are we speaking of?”

“His name was Sam, I think.”

“Sam the Indian?”

“Not Sam. Something else.”

I do a quick analysis of where Mrs. Callahan’s class is likely to be in US history right now, and come up with the War of 1812. “Tecumseh?”

“Yeah!”

“OK. Go to the library. But before you go, I’m writing down Tecumseh’s name for you, so you don’t do that same routine to Sister Mary Catherine.”

“OK.”
