Unlike Wallace, Obama did demonstrate some understanding before coming into office that anti-terrorist operations have to be thought of in terms of Minimal Harm (at best). Even then he made a point of saying that the true ‘hard core’ of the Islamist terror groups had to be neutralized either by death or imprisonment. And to some people, the idea that there are people out there who don’t have grievances that can be assuaged, people who have decided that what they feel needs to happen involves your death, is simply unfathomable.

Ultimately, as a senator Barack Obama was naive in a number of ways, but unlike Henry Wallace in the 40’s he was able to understand that sometimes the other guy is going after you because he really is evil.

I think frankly everyone’s a little naive when they assume the office. I mean everyone wants to save the world and all that. Once you get in there, you’re faced with difficult choices. It’s really a tough job. I never get why other than the prestige that comes with the office why kids aspire to be president.
