The affair didn’t cause the murder. The reaction to the affair did.

Right now there is a large push by the NRA and many in the GOP to declare that guns will keep you safe. We know this is not true, and I’m glad that so far we’ve only had a couple of scares— accidental weapon discharges— and no actual shootings from the silly, panicky reaction to suddenly gun-up the schools.

I’m not disputing those things. I’m saying that media coverage of the murder that focuses on the fact that the victim hosted a hunting show and was killed with a gun seems to many pro-gun people intended to emphasize an ‘evil gun’ theme sometimes seen in the media. I myself believe that the lesson of the story is the perils of wronging others as grievously as he did.

Adultery is also disobeying God, in my eyes. I’m noy saying the law should account for that last; it shouldn’t. But that does influence how I regard a man who cuckolds another man.
