It’s articles like this that can persuade people that there was merit to Karl Marx argument that “Religion is the opium of the people”. There are so many who are inspired by their religion to help others but too many are captured by a prosperity gospel or by white evangelicals and other conservatives (such as William Barr) who have an outsized presence in the public arena and who use their religion to bludgeon others.
