a whole lot of the libertarian movement is extrapolating “keep my taxes low and leave me the fuck alone” to things where that doesn’t really work. nor does it help that a lot of people within the movement think they’re smarter than average.

That’s the best take on the movement I’ve seen. It’s an easy enough basic philosophy to get. But the smugness especially on the economic matters because a lot of em fancy themselves enlightened because they can cite Hayek in discussion when they’re really no more smarter than the average person in economic matters. They’re really in a way like doctrinaire Marxists. Legalize and privatize everything. They get why police brutality is a problem but they thumb their noses at those who think privatized prisons are shady af. Always mistrusting of any government but willing to let business misdeeds go unpunished.
