Joker was basically a pastiche/homage to Taxi Driver and The King of Comedy. What propels the film is Joaquin Phoenix, who gave a great performance as the titular character and gave us a decent origin story film - albeit, like the Joker, an origin story we can’t be entirely sure is true, as it’s demonstrated pretty clearly in the film that Arthur Fleck/Joker is, at best, an unreliable narrator.

I still want to see it. I’m not gonna let incel assholes ruin a good story.
