Democracy was supposed to “liberate” these Iron Curtain nations. But what we have seen is that supposedly “democratic” leaders have used the power of the ballot to subvert “republican” norms. (Yes, these labels are interchangeable in political science, i.e. the Liberal Democrats are conservatives in Japan).

What we have in the US is the Nationalist-Republicans in opposition to the Constitutional-Democrats. Mind you, I am just describing how each party thinks not fringe parties such as Libertarian or Constitution.

What is clear is that the GOP has become a party more akin to Hungary, Poland or far-right France than the UK, Germany or Japan.
