The traffic out of Madras Oregon was insane. 2 lane road. one direction packed the other virtually empty. People arrived over several days but all left within a half hour of the end of totality. My daughter and I were on back streets but when we got to 97 the traffic hardly moved, most of the movement was people turning around and leaving space. We barely got 1 MPH for the first 3 hours, then every time there was a passing lane the morons couldn’t merge back together smoothly. South of Bend we got to the same situation with the passing lanes so my daughter found an alternate route that saved an hour. and we only had about another 90 minutes of traffic jam on 97 before everybody spaced apart about 100-300 yards and traffic flowed smoothly at 65. Nobody passed or bunched up, they were just happy to be moving. It took us 7 hours to get from Madras to our hotel in Klamath Falls. about a 2.5 hour trip at 4 AM on the way up. I saw what I think is every trooper they had, on duty, in a vehicle. All in all I think it worked better than it seemed at the time. I want to commend Oregon DOT on closing off the passing lanes after they saw the morons trying to merge at the end. Great job Orange Vest Dudes.
