Johnson was impeached for faithfully carrying out Lincoln’s intentions to go easy on the Southern states to reconcile them to their reincorporation into the Union. If Lincoln had lived, the Ultras in the Republican party probably wouldn’t have impeached him, but his historical image would have suffered considerably.
