Jimmy, for his other flaws, is actually a Christian. That tends to be a real problem for evangelicals because they want to pretend that their fantasy of power is what really reflects Christianity. Jimmy will always be the reality unlike them.

Which is most of the reason why the religious right hates Carter so much.
