Yes, that happened. Note that the red flag raised over the Negro Fort under the Union Jack did not hold the modern “Revolution” meaning of a red flag. In 1816, for a fort to fly a red flag under its national flag was a sign that its garrison would give the attacking force no quarter; i.e. anyone who tried to storm the fort would be killed.
