That was one of the stranger aspects of the 1918 Flu - it disproportionately killed young, healthy people and left older and younger folks alone. Most flu has a ‘M’ shaped age/mortality distribution - youngs and olds most susceptible. This one was an inverted V.

I’ve read a story a while back about the 1918 Spanish flu pandemic over on Ars Technica and one of the studies cited on why so many healthy people succumbed posited that particular flu strain kicked people’s immune response into maximum overdrive and that what tended to kill so many otherwise healthy people.
