This thread talks about a number of the theological problems that American Evangelicalism is based on - but the greatest of these is the false teachings that John Nelson Darby first proposed (and popularized) as the pre-tribulation rapture in 1827. Darby and other prominent Brethren were part of the Brethren movement which impacted American Christianity, especially with movements and teachings associated with Christian eschatology and fundamentalism, primarily through their writings. With the publication of the The Fundamentals (a series of 90 essays starting in 1910) this garbage theology got it’s foot in the door every place that fell for the anti-modern world attitudes of Fundamentalism.

So like they say in the thread, why worry about tomorrow if the end is nigh? No need to repent for real from their sins and their racism. Never mind that even while saying apocalyptic things, Jesus also said no one knows when the end is coming and Paul taught that even if the end is nigh, one is not freed from living a virtuous life, working or caring for the community. And god forbid they should be forced to live up to the promise of Paul that “There is no longer Jew or Greek, there is no longer slave or free, there is no longer male and female; for all of you are one in Christ Jesus.” for that would require them to live the Way rather than grift their way through it.

This level of error is why Christianity in America is not worth following, not really, unless you find one of the small church groups trying to emerge from this mess. Some of us try hard to live the way of Jesus but when you watch these asshole shit on the world and shriek that “God sez it’s OK ‘cause ur all gonna get killed in our fantasy of the Endtimes!” , well, it just makes me want to give up.

OTOH, why should I surrender what I am just because those assholes stealing the name of the annointed? I’ll do what I can despite those who want to make atheism the only really sane choice in modern America (yeah, I know. I never claimed to be sane ;)
