Yeah, that’s pretty much how the appointment game has worked with the Supreme Court since… well, forever. It’s entirely plausible that had Clinton won, Kennedy wouldn’t have retired; but perhaps Ginsberg or Breyer would have. It’s become somewhat rare for a justice to retire when a member of the other party has the White House.

Technically Stevens and Souter for Obama but they stopped being seen as Republican judicial picks years ago. Always have Ford credit for defending Stevens as a judge when wingnuts would attack him.
