The roof didn’t collapse. It was scary but not catastrophic. Lucky them.

It’s nature, people. It is the natural order of things. Strike/slip faults will occasionally snap and you’ll get an 8.1 earthquake. Dip/slip faults (like the Cascade, which should scare the shit out of you) could snap at greater than a 9 (10 times more powerful, it’s a logarithmic scale) , like the Aceh and Sendai quakes,

Then there are deep crustal quakes like the Madrid, Missouri quake that we really, to this day, do not understand. It occurred at the south edge of the granitic craton of the continent. The mechanism is still not understood.
