People who actually read and study the Bible tell me that the notion of planes falling from the sky when all the True Believers are caught up in the Great Snatch is is just Bad Theology.

But the megachurch grifters are more interested into packing seats and filling donation baskets than in teaching Gospel, so they lean on the sensationalism of Fire and Brimstone.

The very idea of the rapture isn’t found in historical Christianity; it’s a relatively recent doctrine of American Evangelical Protestantism and their sectarian premillennial dispensationalist eschatology. But they’re extraordinarily good at popularizing their ideas and spreading them throughout popular culture.

On the subject of The Omen versus The Exorcist, by any metric, The Exorcist is a far better film (I’d say it’s the gold standard of the supernatural horror genre). But whereas most people would tell you that the Antichrist is the son of Satan (thanks to The Omen) how many people can name the demon that possessed Regan MacNeil off the top of their heads?

And the answer to the latter question is not “the devil”.
