We really need a three prong rail system in the US, or at least in California. We need some sort of local (city/county level) light rail, an inter-county regular rail (something that connects the neighboring counties), and then a major city high speed rail (San Diego to LA to Fresno to SF).
There are a thousand and three issues with making that happen. Plenty of towns won’t want to build light rail. And those that do will face eminent domain issues. Construction costs will be high because the local and inter-county lines will likely be built in areas that are already well developed. With local light rail, there will inevitably be issues with how it affects local traffic. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg.
