Today’s un-suspected factoid. Admiral Phillippe de Gaulle, only son of former President and WWII leader Charles de Gaulle, will be 100 on December 28.
He was a midshipman at the French naval academy at the time of the collapse in 1940. He did not flee with his father but managed to escape later and became an officer in the Free French Navy. He saw heavy combat during the war. This included commanding a platoon of Sherman tanks in the Régiment Blindé de Fusiliers-Marins (Marine armored regiment) during the liberation of Paris and the drive into Germany in 1944-45. He retired from the Navy in 1982 and was later a senator. His son, Charles de Gaulle II, is 73 and is a senator now.
