And I learned an important point about preparing for a disaster or responding to one: Protein is very important. One of the Red Cross guys said that early on, they had lots of generic snacks - breakfast stuff, granola bars, etc - but after a while, people need protein. What became valuable were the tuna snack packs. They started having to ration them because people were going through them so fast. The packs are also good because they didn’t need to be refrigerated or heated. So, if you feel the need to give something to a relief effort other than money, things with meat, that don’t have to be refrigerated, are very useful.
