Interestingly Southerners in the 1850s were for States right regarding slavery.

Then when northern states refused to return escaped slaves, southerners demanded the Federal government step in and they became against states rights.

A bit off topic, there were discussions in among some slavers in the 1850’s to legalize slavery of whites.

A bit too difficult to enforce in the days before fingerprints or genetic testing…
