When Arlen Spector won his last Senate campaign, I think in 2004, he tried to present himself as a dam against Republican craziness. He said that since he would be Chairman of the Judiciary committee, he would try to keep the RWNJ’s off the federal bench. Right after the election, the GOP forced him to promise he would give all the nominees a fair chance if he wanted to keep that chairmanship. As much as Romney may want to pretend he’s a moderate, he knows and the party knows exactly what is expected of him.
