Varian’s War was a pretty good TV movie exploration of the attitudes back then in America.
I wrote a short paper on that subject back in college (US and Canada resisting/refusing visas for refugee Jews in the 30s.) You have to recall that the isolationist vibe was very strong in the US in the 30s, and with it ran a lot of anti-immigrant and racist rhetoric.
