Ah, Jindal. Speaking of stupid, I honestly think the “volcano monitoring” shit he said back in 2009 was one of the dumbest things I’ve ever heard from a GOPer. And yes, this includes all the shit about Obama being a Marxist who hates Jesus and America.

Forget Mt. St. Helens, Mt. Rainier, the Yellowstone supervolcano, and all the volcanoes that dot Alaska and Hawaii. Is Jindal familiar with a little place called Clark Air Base? Yeah, it was a major air force installation in the Philippines. It sat 15 miles from Mt. Pinatubo. In the spring of 1991, Pinatubo began stirring. Thanks to the hard work of USGS scientists, they were able to predict a major eruption at Pinatubo weeks in advance. Thanks to their predictions, thousands of US military personnel and their families were evacuated a mere 5 days before Pinatubo exploded in the largest eruption this planet has seen in the last 100 years. The death toll among Americans (not to mention the tens of thousands of Filipino civilians who were evacuated) would have been staggering.

Jindal has probably never heard the names Rick Hoblitt, or Dave Harlow, or John Ewert, but these men were heroes, and they stayed on after the evacuation, hunkered down in a bomb shelter while Pinatubo sent pyroclastic flows racing towards Clark. Maybe Jindal should ask the commander of the base at the time, General William Studor, who said the eruption was “scaring the hell out of me”, whether he thinks volcano monitoring is worth it.

Sorry for the long rant, but if Jindal doesn’t think the government should be spending relatively tiny sums of money to protect the lives and property of its citizens, he doesn’t belong on a fucking school board, much less in a position of power like Governor or Louisiana, or worse….
