On the topic of LGF as a hate site, there’s no doubt that there was a bit of anti-Muslim bias in the years immediately following 9/11; but it never came anywhere near progressing to outright hatred. Calling LGF a hate site is somewhat akin to calling Fox a news network; sure, there may be elements somewhere in the past that can be twisted and tortured into being called “news”, but certainly nothing resembling such today.

The comments section did contain quite a bit of anti-Muslim vitriol and hatred after 9/11, and I started posting here in October 2001.

But Charles didn’t get swept away in all that. He did his best to eliminate the worst offenders, and began the registration system to purge the comment section to effect an even greater amount of control over his site. This is, and remains, his site, and he saw all that hate as a reflection on him.

To his credit, he did something about it. He did the registrations and he recruited a couple of people, like Stinky, to make sure things didn’t get out of hand.

And the split with the anti-Islam right, made with principle and conviction, was and remains the right thing to have done.

It’s his place and his rules, and I’ve been privileged enough to be around for a good portion of it.
