Interestingly, I just finished a book this weekend about how the Satanic Panic affected D&D and other roleplaying games. A point made consistently in the book was that all of the moral panickers were participating in their own kind of game where they roleplayed as the heroes fighting against a global demonic conspiracy that could never actually exist — basically, an ARG where the participants had forgotten it was a game. While they loved talking about gamers who could no longer tell the difference between themselves and their game characters, the moral panickers were themselves the perfect examples of that behavior.
And to bring it back on topic: Yes, Kim Davis and her supporters have very much lost track of reality so they can go on pretending to be the heroes of the game they’re playing out in their heads…
It takes a hell of an ego to do that, IMHO.
