The VP office as we know it today, didn’t really come into being until the Truman and Eisenhower Administrations. IIRC, Truman didn’t even get national security briefings during the Roosevelt Administration. And Ike relied on Nixon to get some stuff done legislatively - in part, likely, because he was recently a member of both the House and Senate.

The practical and technical role of the VP are quite divergent. Practically, they are now part of the administration. But technically, by the language of the constitution, they are really part of the Senate, with a very, very limited role.

IIRC the presidential nominee didn’t even choose the VP until FDR chose Henry Wallace in 1940. Before then, it was the convention.
