Well, it was just intended to last through the bankruptcies. The real scandal is that GM and Chrysler were able to shed product liability claims on cars made before Chapter 11. Especially given that plaintiffs’ lawyers give tons of money to the Democrats.

I am not a lawyer, but I believe normal bankruptcies allow you to shad warranties. They are a liability(or potential liability) of the now defunct operation. Of course any smart acquiring company that keeps the name will honor the warranties, if only to ensure customers come back.

If I remember correctly airline miles work the same way. They would be near the end of the line in bankrupts, but any sane management will continue to accept them after a reorg.
