Just to be clear - I’m not defending such derpitude. I’m trying to understand the psychology. Think of guru as a kind of lab rat. Why would someone “lie” about something so easily proven false?

Because the narrative NBC created at the beginning of the reporting set the tone for all subsequent reporting. NBC stating that Zimmerman spontaneously uttering that he was pursuing a suspicious person who was black poisoned the dialog well. What would the narrative have been if the entire tape was played? Would we be more sympathetic to Zimmerman? No, but we would not be singularly fixated on race rather than Zimmerman’s familial relationships and SYG.

SYG equally shields all ethnic groups from prosecution.

I know what happened with the NBC tape.

I read countless blog comments talking about “race-baiting” well before the NBC tape.

Were you reading blogs about this case before the NBC tape was aired? Do you watch Fox News?
