Hey, SFZ: The other day on Amazon I came across a high school world history book and noticed it had at least three different editions—one for Michigan, one for North Carolina, and another for Tennessee.

Why is that, do you know? It struck me as odd. Are we teaching different versions of world history to our kids? (Wouldn’t particularly surprise me these days.)

I can’t speak with authority, since I don’t know anything about schools in those states. Different states have different history standards, so my best guess would be that the texts are either a. tweaked slightly to meet specific standards, ie, Tennesee agreed to the book, but wanted an addition of a paragraph about Frederick the Great because he’s in their standards by name or b. it’s the same text, but in three different ‘editions’, each one having been stamped with the approving board’s seal of approval for their particular state.
