OTOH Trump has a knack for saying whatever he thinks people want to hear at any certain time. Since he’s the consummate bullshitter, he doesn’t give a fuck whether Statement A contradicts Statement B, because A was true because he said it, and now B is true because he said it. Any other explanation is fake news.

And he has a whole staff of people whose job is to explain that what he said is not what he really meant.
