Also having grown up in Kansas - the default is voting R - no bad how bad the R is - they believe the R will always be better than the D. This is usually because of a single issue voting (abortion).

And this is why, despite the need to campaign nationwide, that the Democrats would be wasting time and resources in certain areas of the country.
