I mentioned a few days ago about a schoolmate revealing many years later how our high school physics teacher had molested her. I finally had time to read her lengthy story, and it went far beyond molestation.

He had raped her on a school trip when she was 15. After suffering months of depression and being near-suicidal, she finally reported it to the school administration. Though he was eventually forced to retire quietly, my schoolmate (younger sister of a classmate) endured months of social isolation and cruelty for blowing the whistle on one of the school’s more popular and effective teachers, a guy who helped lots of kids get into college on sports and science scholarships, and who had led the lacrosse team on championship and championship.

While she recovered and went on to be a successsful lawyer, life for that teacher took a turn for the worse. He had molested his daughters. Both committed suicide years ago. He also had molested his grand-daughter, and that’s what finally got him a criminal record, jail time and an entry on a sex offenders registry. He died at age 80.

And it turns out that our high school knew about his problems when they hired him in 1962, because that’s why he had to leave his previous school. It was another twenty years before he was finally forced out of our school after that girl reported the rape.

Though the rape happened after I had already graduated, there were other incidents that occurred while I was in high school that I never knew about at the time, but have since come to light. He was someone who, by virtue of his position, reputation and alleged devotion to his church, managed to prey on teenaged girls for more than 20 years. And our high school administration and school board, who were more worried about the reputation of the school district than the girls, let it go on far too long.
