I don’t think you’re following my point. FDR was willing to ignore African Americans to get Social Security. I’m glad we have Social Security FWIW and I understand fully the importance of pragmatism but holding up FDR as a political deity and deeming modern Democrats sell-outs because they’re not for universal and single payer is the problem. Jim Crow was also on a state level. Discrimination existed in the North but it was more informal. Not saying it was right of course but that’s not why FDR did it. FDR did it because he needed the Southerners. A pure political move.

I don’t think he’s actually disagreeing with so you so much as looking at it from a different angle. Would Social Security have passed had he included trades that favored blacks and women?
