It’s the one-step-beyond pettiness that bugs me. The article says that the interim solution Ms. Davis (or her lawyers) are demanding is that she won’t stop the clerks from issuing the certificates, but that those certificates must not have her name or title on them {the previous demand} AND “must also state that they are issued pursuant to a federal court order” {let’s up the ante again, shall we?}

She (or lawyers) still insist that they are in charge and can set the terms, just short of the outright refusal that would land her back in jail. Draw it out, push the limits, see what precedents they can set for the next cases they’re probably lining up for additional clerks with ‘conscience’ concerns.
