I wish I could understand it better too. I see the alt right’s existence as a rejection of the values that were taught to my generation in school. We read Disry of Anne Frank, Night, Richard Wright’s Black Boy, excerpts from Frederick Douglass’s autobiography, etc and I think what these guys feel is they’re being picked on for being white. It’s complete shit since we do celebrate Washington, Lincoln, the Roosevelts, and others.

Again, it feels like it’s less of a new phenomenon, and more the surge of online outreach making it easier for fringe ideas to gain purchase and fester. These ideas have existed for decades, once you scratch the surface. It’s just easier than ever to find “kindred spirits” who reinforce these ideas without having to face contrary ones, until you rewire yourself to convince yourself that proof to the contrary really is proof of the conspiracy.
