My point basically was the loss of my vision of Americans as friendly, welcoming people, who would reject Trump’s racism — and that of his followers — as antithetical to American values. That 60 million voted for him, despite those flaws, pretty much destroyed that vision for me, and makes it much harder to tell Chinese students that they’ll perfectly fine visiting or studying in the USA.

My FB friend instead concluded that I was labeling all 60 million as racists, because they disagreed with my point of view, and then went on to excuse Trump’s extremism as mere political rhetoric. She’s not my neighbor. In fact, I’m not even sure we’ve met IRL.

I was hesitant to say anything initially because I didn’t want to insult someone who was a personal friend or relative, but the commenter on Facebook seemed incredibly dense.
