The way they’re going to get that to change is not through the DNC but by local candidates. I’ve said it before. The way we’ll win locally is if people see our guys and ladies as so and so, who happens to be a Democrat rather than that Democrat who happens to be so and so. I don’t wear my political beliefs on my sleeves with the kids I coach in basketball but I make no secret of my political beliefs with my youngest brother’s friends.

I honestly have no idea how they’re going to get that to change without seriously reforming the entire white rural conservative mindset from the ground up. It’s not just a matter of education or religion or whiteness but of the quality of and interplay between them. There’s a bunker mentality, fed by sources of propaganda that are eagerly consumed, that tells the (disproportionately white and male) residents of these areas that their natural enemies are the urban and suburban tax bases that actually pay for the very roads and civic infrastructure that makes rural life possible at modern standards of living. Entire swaths of this country, both demographically and geographically are not only easily brainwashed but have become eagerly complicit in the process simply to feed their own addiction to grievance and resentment.
