The most important takeaway from the results in KY and VA is that the 2018 trend of the suburbs shifting to the Democrats continues. The GOP may well find themselves left with no choice but to double down on trying to pick up votes in rural areas for 2020, which will further weaken them in the all-important suburbs

The GOP strategy was to take advantage of the high turnout of the base plus suppressing the rest of the voters, either through apathy/indifference or through active voter suppression/fraud.

That worked in the low-turnout atmosphere of 2016 but will be hard to repeat as recent elections have demonstrated.

And at least some of the base (the Christian Fundamentalist end) have grown disenchanted with Trump, not enough to get them to vote Democratic, but perhaps enough to dampen their high turnout rate.
