I say this with no data to back it up, but I don’t think anything has changed but the reporting/social media. Used to be you would MAYBE hear about a story like this if it was local and in any given town this probably doesn’t happen all that often. Now you hear about things like this from all over the country/world so it seems to be a daily occurrence.

Said it better than I could. It’s not a new problem but it is discussed more now.
