Yeah, that’s probably about right. Partly because the presidential nominee was chosen by the convention, and the VP was usually the result of horse trading. It could probably still happen if the presidential nominee tries to choose someone unacceptable to the party base. Like imagine if McCain would have gone forward with nominating Lieberman in 2008? No way there isn’t a floor fight over the VP.
