But seriously, a national ID card - free of charge - for every eligible voting citizen would set a national standard and save costs over the long term.

I can remember a time when conservatives took great pride in the US being a place that *didn’t* have a national ID card. It was a matter of FREEDOM!!!!!11! to not have to have ID. Anyone who suggested issuing such cards was accused of piloting black helicopters or wanting to tattoo us all with the mark of the beast or government surveillance or pinko commies out to steal their bodily fluids…
