I agree, and my apparently flippant reference to “Mrs T” was based on reports that her opinion was that he had plenty and shouldn’t take the job, while his was that he had some kind of duty. I don’t totally discount the idea of his looking for a Big Score, but I suspect that he did have some kind of sense of national obligation — and if so, I doubt he’ll stay much longer.

Conversely, if he does stay, he’s messing up his reputation permanently. If you were a multimillionaire of old and rich enough to retire, and healthy enough to anticipate a lovely time for a couple of decades, which would you choose?
